Solar basics

How does solar work?

Solar energy is utilised through a process that makes use of photovoltaic (PV) panels, sunlight, and clever engineering. Here’s how it works:

Solar panels, also known as PV panels, are made up of multiple interconnected solar cells, usually composed of silicon. When sunlight hits these cells, it excites electrons, creating an electric current. This direct current (DC) electricity flows through the panels.

The next step is inverter conversion. The DC electricity generated by solar panels is then converted into alternating current (AC) by an inverter. AC is the type of electricity used in our homes and businesses.

If your solar system produces more electricity than you need, the excess can be fed back into the grid.

During cloudy days or at night, you draw electricity from the grid. This interaction with the grid is facilitated by net metering, which allows you to receive credits for the excess energy you contribute.

From PV panels capturing sunlight to inverter conversion and grid interaction, each step plays a vital role in harnessing the power of the sun. Whether you’re reducing your carbon footprint, saving on utility bills, or ensuring backup power during outages, solar energy empowers a brighter, more sustainable future.

Benefits of solar energy

Solar energy provides significant benefits to both residential and commercial users.
Let’s explore some of the benefits of solar energy here.

For residential users

  • Lower utility bills
By generating your own electricity, you significantly reduce or even eliminate your monthly utility bills.
  • Reduced carbon footprint
Every kilowatt-hour of solar energy you generate reduces the need for fossil fuels, mitigating climate change.
  • Energy independence
Generating your own power reduces reliance on external energy sources. You’re less vulnerable to utility rate changes.

For commercial users

  • Reduced operating costs
Solar energy lowers electricity bills for businesses, freeing up capital for other investments.
  • CSR benefits
It demonstrates your commitment to sustainability. It resonates positively with customers and investors.
  • Long-term savings
It insulates businesses from volatile energy prices—enabling predictable energy costs for decades.
